English
The English curriculum is structured to offer children a total language experience in which oral language; reading and writing are fully
integrated.
The curriculum sees oral language as an integrating force in language learning.
Oral language is a strategy for learning, and talk and discussion are encouraged in every curriculum area.
Oral language activity:
- develops children's ability to use language socially
- Assists cognitive development
- forms the basis on which reading and writing skills are fostered
- enriches children's language experience and stimulates the imagination
The approach to reading is based on children's total language experience. In developing phonological and phonemic awareness in the context of
using a range of cueing strategies, children learn to read a wide variety of texts. As children develop as readers
- they read for pleasure and information
- they learn to locate and use books for a variety of purposes
- they develop higher level comprehension skills
- they learn to read for both functional and social purposes
- The ability to write clearly and expressively is developed through the writing process itself. In the writing process: children are given the
opportunity to write for a variety of purposes, for different audiences and in a range of genres through a consistent experience of drafting, editing or redrafting they develop the ability to self-correct their own writing.
- they are helped to develop a command of the conventions of grammar, spelling and punctuation, and to acquire an appreciation of the appropriate
level of presentation required for a particular piece of writing
- the use of ICTs is an important factor in helping children to learn to write.
The English curriculum is dedicated to the principle that an appreciation of the power of language and the ability to use language effectively
helps to empower the individual, culturally, socially and economically.
